Whether it’s a local award or an internationally acclaimed accolade, being recognised in a field of highly skilled culinary professionals is something to be proud of and most chefs aspire to. As the largest chef school in South Africa, we would like to recognise South African culinary greats for their impressive achievements:
Pete Goffe-Wood – The Risk Taker
You might recognise Pete from MasterChef South Africa, but Cape Townians have known Pete for his catering company, Kitchen Cowboys Food Studio. His culinary antics don’t stop here. He sits on the judging panel for The Eat Out awards, San Pellegerino’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and the Diners Club 50’s Best Restaurants. His achievements as a chef include:
- Partaking and placing at the World BBQ Championships
- Winning the dessert category for the Global Pizza Challenge
- Writing his own recipe book, ‘A Life Digested’
A household name in the South African culinary industry, Reuben Riffel is the epitome of hard work bringing big rewards. By learning from his family and later his head chef influences, such as Richard Carstens and Christopher Dehosse, Reuben quickly worked his way up the kitchen brigade.
Now his award winning restaurants are in some of South Africa’s hottest locations, including the One & Only Hotel at the V&A Waterfront. Not only is he a TV personality, author, entrepreneur and brand representative, but he also has serious awards next to his name too, such as:
- Chef of the year – 2004 Eat Out Awards
- Restaurant of the year – 2004 Eat Out Awards
This young and vibrant Chef from Kwa-Zulu Natal in her short career has already won every major and minor culinary competition in South Africa as well as awards internationally. Following a rigorous selection process, Jodi was also selected to represent SA in 2005 by the South African Chefs association (SACA) and has since gone on to achieve great things.
She now owns her own very successful business, The Food Design Agency which focuses on high quality product development for the food and hospitality industry.
Although they may not have a slew of awards attached to their names, there are other phenomenal chefs that have become icons in our culinary world, namely:
- Billy Gallagher – Chair of the South African Chefs Association, and former president of the World Association of Chefs Societies
- Benny Masekwameng – executive chef at Monte Casino and TV personality
- Chantel Dartnall – winner of Chef of the Year and head chef at Restaurant Mosiac
Our culinary icons continue to influence and inspire people in the industry to guide and educate South African culinary trends, setting a benchmark for young chefs to aspire to. Whether you’re creating beautiful dishes with flavourful ingredients or perfecting the art of pastry, remember – all successful chefs had one thing in common, a passion for cooking.
