At the tender age of 22, Jane Jager is a Capsicum alumni with 3 qualifications under her belt and her own business. After graduating in 2011 having completed courses in Pastry, General Cooking and Management, Jane did an internship at The Round House in Camps Bay and then worked at La Belle Bistro and Bakery at the Alphen Hotel in Constantia, before launching herself as a chocolatier with her own label, Saszali.
She says that she was able to create a vision for herself in the food industry because of Chef Daniella at Capsicum Culinary Studio in Cape Town, who gave students a weekly task in researching different establishments. Drawing from this, Jane teamed up with her friend Anya to start their own business and with the help of her graphic designer sister, they were able to put Saszali together.
Saszali offers specially flavoured and beautifully packaged chocolates as gifts for special occasions. Imagine the blend of thyme and honey in chocolate! What about the uniquely South African Buchu infused white chocolate?
Jane says that it is important to sell more than just chocolate and as such each of her handmade individually wrapped chocolates tells a story through its unique flavour blend.
Her advice to young chefs starting out is to always impress the chef you are working under with your passion and willingness to learn. However, when starting your own business it is even more important to continue learning through the experiences with your clients. “Have a vision and a plan, and remind yourself daily what it is” says Jane.
